Art Car: Game of Life

Growing up in Houston I saw a number of art cars and often stumbled upon abandoned ones throughout town. This became a regular scavenger hunt for my friends and I. When I met Kate Warren and heard her passion to bring an art car parade to Chattanooga, I was determined to make one with one of my classes. We partnered with her organization “Art 120” to fly in Rebecca Bass, Art Car guru, for a weekend workshop with our students. Rebecca taught the students some simple methods for application and we launched the Game of Life. My middle school classes partnered with a local underserved elementary class at Calvin Donaldson to create a breadth of thematic items based on a student led design. We didn’t have a standard in mind or any limitations and so were surprised to discover that among the other professional contestants our very own won first place in the competition!
