I have worn many hats over the course of my career. Most recently, as a designer of spaces, curriculum, classrooms and even native landscapes. However, threaded throughout my career has been working in the arts as an educator and program developer.

A word of introduction,

For the past 4 years I have returned to Minneapolis as a program director for the arts of a small, private school in the downtown area that hosts students and families from over 90 different countries. Furthermore, the school is committed to serving 70% underserved students. I arrived at an opportune time when the school was undergoing a growth stage in an effort to double enrollment and, therefore, space. This provided a rich opportunity of learning as I jumped into conceptualizing a new Arts and Innovation curricular program and discipline specific spaces. Over the course of two years from pencil to build out I learned every aspect of the design/build process while I worked on my Masters in Sustainable Design. This has afforded me an additional skill-set as someone that is equipped to approach a project and a classroom with a sustainable systems lens. My passion continues to be developing currcicular programs that have adapted to a new generation of students entering a world of change and uncertainty. Personally, I am excited to be part of that journey.

Educational Ethos

Ten years ago I did focused research for my undergrad final on generational patterns. After a decade of seeing shifts in overall culture and student learning styles, I am convinced we are at a pivotal moment in education that virtually no-one will be prepared for. The formalization of STEM programs and trade school emphasis has yielded great benefits in fostering a school culture of innovation and applied learning. I have been a strong advocate of this having a continued presence in a commercial environment. That said, I have seen the concerning trends of a general millaise and reticence to lean into risk taking and ambitious learning. Trends in GenZ reinforce these predictive models of mass changes in generational learning, especially for a cohort of students impacted by COVID and who are the most surveiled generation in history. One primary loss is the humanities in these iterative innovation programs. I count myself blessed for having a formative education in the classics and a classical approach to learning. I’ve come to believe that with increased AI and digital interfacing in our learning we need to teach the story of ideas, masters of craft, and a deep exploration of ethics. I believe that disciplines of design and the arts are the perfect vehicle for engaging both larger cultural ideas and deeper personal reflections. I am committed to teach with an adaptive miindset that meets students at their point of growth and my passion is for cultivating spaces for inquiry, experimentation and mastery of materials.
